blackie is home!

hi there, sorry for not posting in the past few weeks..
summarizing on what went on, blackie finally made it home but she is not allowed to wander about so she has to be caged still…
she is currently back at winston’s place, where the family created a little homely area for her just outside the flat. it is quite a private corridor that is shared between 2 homes so blackie is really quite safe there.
before she left the clinic, the vet prescribed antibotics for her, we had to collect the meds from gleneagles hospital. we tried force feeding her initally but it didnt go too well with blackie, finally we’ve been adding it to her food which works fine for her.

I think blackie is secretly a dog. Winston takes her down for walks everyday! He has a leash for her but will not use it unless it involves roads, but blackie follows him around like a little pup! i witness this for myself on sat!

we are getting the feeling that blackie does not like being caged. she is always finding a way to escape and honestly, we are not sure how long more she’ll allow us to cage her without howling. anyway, if we do release her, we would have to neuter her first…Winston wants to adopt her but in our current living arrangment, it is not possible, we will only be getting our own place in 2 years.. any kind souls willing to foster her for 2 years first? she is really a darling!

On sun, she appeared to be a little down, her nose became quite watery and she looked sick.. we will be monitoring her for a couple of days and if she does not seem better, we will take her back to the vet.

when can she come home?

winston has been visiting blackie twice a day as the vet says that that blackie only eats when winston is there, so he sacrifices his own lunch time to make sure that blackie eats. he really loves that cat.
over the weekend, we’ve been making 2 trips each day to the vet just to make sure that the cutie eats and it is all worth it cos when we get there, its clockwork, blackie eats and she eats a lot! the vet and the nurses all commented on it and even though sunday is closed for visitation, they (the staff of animal clinic) will still call winston and allow us to see blackie to coax her into eating. the manja cat!

I was a little sad when we visited her on friday. Her eyes were watery, red and crusty. she kept sneezing and looked so miserable. She does look a bit better when winston started to stroke her. I swear she and winston started having a conversation as well. Winston was talking to her, telling her to hang in there, to be strong, to fight her illness and blackie responsed!!! She was meowing and blinked a couple of times. Ooh blackie! get well soon!

I changed my opinion about the people of animal clinic. The vet has become softer and she is showing blackie a lot of concern and love. I hope under her care, blackie will recover.
Blackie’s leg is really stronger, previously she cannot lift her leg to scratch herself but she can now! its quite adorable. when we rub her under her chin, she will also lift her leg to scratch herself.

She really hates when it’s meds time. On sunday, we helped the nurse when she injected blackie with flu meds and antibiotics for her flu. Winstom wrapped blackie with a little cloth towel while the nurse gave blackie her meds. I just made cooing noises and stroke her head. Blackie was surprisingly calm though she meowed in pain a couple of times. Nurse said that it really makes a difference when we are around cos usually Blackie will howl and be very unmanageable though this time we had a horror moment when Blackie leapt down to the floor in an attempt to escape! we were really worried about her leg! Thank goodness she was okay.

We will be visiting her again later. Hope that she will come home soon and perhaps she’ll feel better.

Blackie Fund

today we visited blackie

just came back from visiting blackie. she’s still fluey and her eyes are coated with pus but she was better than yesterday. my heart hurts looking at her. animals should not suffer, the nurse said she did not eat so they had to force feed her earlier.
we stayed with her for almost 30mins, winston gave her his infamous ’spa massage’, its basically tender, loving, care rubs all over her body and head. Blackie loves it, she looked so contented. Got to take a good look at her leg, it’s almost as good as new!
Please say a prayer for blackie! For her to recover from her flu.

blackie is sick

just a short post to inform you that Blackie has not returned home yet. She has a fever and the flu. Hope she recovers soon.

blackie is coming home tonight!

on sunday, winston, his mum and i went to Serangoon North Ave 1 to buy a cage, food, protein sachets, cat sand for blackie. we went from shop to shop trying to make sure that the cage that we got for blackie will be big enough yet not overwhelming huge for her to roam around in it. her leg is still weak. finally we picked a purple/pink cage which we thought would be suitable for her.

winston will be picking blackie up from the vet tonight, speaking of which, let me sidetrack for a bit. The vet (whom I shall not mention here, lets call her N) is really starting to piss me off! We went to see Blackie on Fri and the first thing she said was ‘So you are taking her home tomorrow’. We said on monday but before we can tell her why, she jumped and said ‘No, you told me Sat! I can’t keep her here anymore’. I calmly told her the reason why we will only be taking Blackie home on Monday is because we needed to make arrangements for her, oh come on! we are not taking a perfectly healthy cat home to roam around in the grass, Blackie has not recovered from her op, she’s fiesty, confused and wondering why the hell she has a cone on her head and she cant clean herself! We need to make sure she has a place to get better.
The vet relented and said we better take her home on Mon cos she cannot keep her here anymore and she said something along the line that Blackie is getting on her nerves or something like that.
I was appalled! Here is a vet telling us to get the cat away from her clinic asap cos the cat was not a good cat! In Blackie’s eyes, she’s in prison and her prison guards detest her.

when can I leave?

So we went into the cage area to see Blackie and she was moved from the second row which was more accessible to the top row and the front of her cage had a towel drapped over it. It was really disheartening to see that. We called out to Blackie and for once, she didnt come towards us. She looked scared, angry and so tiny.
I asked the vet’s assistant if Blackie was really that badly behaved and before he could answer, the vet came by and said ‘what is the problem?’
To Vet N – while I appreciate you took over Blackie’s case, I really do not care for your attitude and your lack of professionalism towards us or Blackie. She is a stray (community) cat and she was probably hurt by another cat hence she cannot help it that she distrusts other animals, so back off and we will never come back to you ever again.
Ok, I feel slightly better ranting. Back to Blackie, she will be coming home tonight, I hope that she will not be too pissed being caged up again.
We plan to look after her till she’s all better then take her to (another) vet to be neutered.
Also, we need to find a home for Blackie after that, due to some personal issues, we are unable to home her after she gets better so anyone who would like to adopt Blackie, do contact me…

Winston and I paid a visit to Blackie yesterday. The little darling is definitely getting better! She still had the cone over her head to prevent her from licking herself and risk opening her wounds and infecting it. Blackie is not happy with that! When we opened the door to her cage, she tried to headbutt her way out and we have to gently nudge her back in, I’m afraid of the strength I use, I dont want to acccidently hurt her so I am really very very gentle. I can tell that Blackie is very attached to Winston. She hearts him. Thats sweet!

Vet told us that Blackie is doing well, and we should be able to take her home soon however Blackie was sneezing a bit so she will check on Blackie and let us know.

It's getting stronger!

She’s putting her body weight onto her leg and its not too strenuous as she is a very skinny cat.
We hope to fatten her up!

A side note to thank everyone who has donated to the Blackie fund! It is because of your generosity that’s why Blackie is getting better. We tell her each time we see her that she’s blessed. The cat is a fighter too! She wants to live and is determined to get better.

Each time I see Blackie, I get reminded of the times we see her at the void deck, running around carefree and running towards us to eat. She even goes on walks with us and climbs short trees! I miss those days and I hope that she will get well soon to do the same things with us again!

Op is over!

Blackie just had her op yesterday! The surgeon inserted a pin into her fractured leg and when winston went to visit her yesterday, she was so much better. She even stretched the fractured leg just probably to say ‘hey! look! its much better now!’
Blackie would still have to stay at the vet for a week or 2 before we bring her home and nurse her back to health.
We will not consider the option of putting her out on the street. The nurse said that Blackie needs to be caged for a while, so that she will not exert her leg. here are some photos of the resilient Blackie! I’m so happy that she’s on the road to recovery

Also, to date, we have received a total of $1622 of donation for Blackie!
Special thanks to my friend Utt who also generously donated $500 to the Blackie fund. I will be posting the names/amt donated to Blackie on this blog end this week.
The money will be used to pay for Blackie’s medical fees, follow up treatments as well as food, cage and maybe a toy or 2. After everything’s sorted, the balance will be donated to another cat in need.
We paid the full amt of $934.65 which is inclusive of Blackie’s op, medication and stay at the vet till 2nd June.

When we meet the vet in charge of Blackie on Thursday, we should know how to proceed from here!
Thanks for everyone who have been concerned about Blackie! She’s a real fighter that girl!

i would just like to express my thanks to everyone who has contributed to the ‘Blackie Op Fund’
We will be seeing the surgeon today or tomorrow and will find out when he’s able to operate on Blackie.

update on blackie

w and i have been visiting blackie almost everyday since she was hospitalised at the Animal Clinic at Sunset Way. We went there again on Sat. Blackie looked a little stronger; the nurses said that she’s eating so that’s a good sign, we have to wait for mon/tues 1st or 2nd june to meet with the ortopedic surgeon and find out what her options are.

I really hope we dont have to amputate her leg. I know she’s a fighter but I just cannot accept that. it really breaks my heart to see her in pain.

Pus was coming out of her leg and we got the nurses to wipe it off. They have to do that constantly and clean her wound. It’s obviously painful for Blackie. Each time they try to clean it, Blackie gets fiesty and howls. Time passes too slowly! I really need to know what can we do for her.

Speaking of which,  we  are extremely thankful to all of you who have contributed to ‘Blackie’s Op Fund’. I will be keeping it very transparent, scanning receipts and keeping everyone posted on the cost. At this point in time, as of June 1st, we have received a total of $522 from kind hearted animals/blackie lovers. Thank you very much.

Its still a bit more to our estimated op cost of $1000++ and there are other costs like her stay which is about $60+ per night due to the medication Blackie needs, so if you would like to help Blackie, please sms or call me at 92351769.
